Silicon-manganese is composed of manganese, silicon, iron and other elements with a small amount of carbon and other kinds of alloy. It is widely used for steelmaking production.

Silicon in Silicon-manganese has strong affinity with manganese and oxygen. Deoxidation products MnSiO3 & MnSiO4 produced in the steelmaking procedure has a temperature of 1270°C and 1345°C respectively. They both have the advantages such as a low melting point, large particles, easy floating, and good deoxidization effect etc.

Under the same conditions, the burning loss rates of silicon and manganese were 46% and 37% respectively. But with the Silicon-manganese alloy, the burning loss rate is 29%. Therefore, it is widely used in steelmaking industry and has become the essential deoxidizing agent and additive in steelmaking industry.

Silicon-manganese is used as a deoxidizer and an alloying element in steel. It is used in its own right as an additive in the steel industry as a deoxidant or utilized in the production of other manganese alloys. Silicon reduces the solubility of carbon in manganese alloys so carbon contents are inversely proportional to the silicon content. Therefore Silico-manganese is also used as an intermediary product for further processing into refined lower carbon ferro manganese grades.
